PROFILE

Experience that tests the whole position

A dispute is rarely understood from a single viewpoint. Taj Awad brings the perspective of a former judge, investigator and senior banking counsel to his role as Head of Legal at NJA. For clients, that means examining the facts, the argument and the commercial consequences together before a position is advanced.

From 2004 to 2021, Taj held senior legal roles at Dubai Islamic Bank, including Vice President, Senior Legal Counsel and Head of the Litigation Unit. His work connected litigation with the bank’s financing, risk, collections and real-estate functions, and included settlement agreements, Islamic finance documentation and corporate governance.

Earlier in his career, he served in the Sudanese judiciary, the Abu Dhabi Police General Authority and Deyaar Development PJSC. He later worked as Senior Legal Counsel at Emirates Advocates and Consultants. Those roles inform how he reviews a file: how the records were established, how a submission answers the opposing case and what the client needs to decide.

At NJA, his work includes directing the preparation of disputes and reviewing legal submissions and expert material. His legal research addresses construction variations, extensions of time and delay provisions, reflecting the importance of connecting contract wording to the records made as work proceeds.
